‘The Advantages of HSE University’s Master’s Programmes Lie in the Extraordinary Diversity of What the University Has to Offer’
While studying in HSE University’s master’s programmes, students receive an education that is geared towards specific professional markets, they can pursue research tracks, and they can even design their own individual curricula that incorporate coursework and expertise different programmes. HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin discusses these benefits and others of HSE University’s master’s programmes.
Master’s-PhD Tracks and Individual Curricula
The advantages of HSE University’s master’s programmes lie in the extraordinary diversity of what the University has to offer. Compared to bachelor’s programmes, those at the master’s level are much more specific and customized. If undergraduate education allows students to develop general competencies, be they in economics, management, chemistry, or physics, a master’s degree is about the honing of one’s skills and knowledge in a specific area.
HSE offers a wide range of master’s programmes that provide sector-specific, niche training.
In addition, students may pursue a research-focused track, and in the coming academic year we will strengthen this track in relation to our new combined master’s - PhD tracks. Master’s students who want to engage in scholarly research will be able to work on projects in select doctoral programmes with an eye towards developing their topic into a PhD thesis in the future. The University offers special opportunities for students of this track, including scholarships and support from research advisors.
In the near future, we will update the university's standards for master's programmes, allowing students to develop their own individual curricula that combine different areas and skills. To this end, we will use courses and subjects from different programmes. This idea has already been implemented for many years in our MAGOLEGO courses for master’s students.
Now we are moving towards implementing it more broadly at the level of all of our master’s programmes, which will allow students to design their own interdisciplinary educational tracks based on their individual needs. HSE master’s programmes can offer highly specialized education tailored to specific professional markets, a research track, and the ability to design one’s own interdisciplinary curriculum.
Online Master’s Programmes
Master's programmes entail a flexible and relatively short period of study; they focus on new, in-demand competencies in specific professional or academic fields. Something that attests to this is the emergence of online master’s programmes. This is an important area that has been developing over the past 3-4 years. In January, HSE University launched Russia’s first fully online-taught master’s programme on Coursera —Master of Data Science.
Before us, there were 13 master's programmes on the Coursera platform. We launched the fourteenth, and now there are several others offered by other world universities
The online master’s programme is fully English-taught and has drawn students from all over the world. The programme, which is offered by the Faculty of Computer Science, so far enjoys a high demand among Russian and international applicants alike. The second cohort will start classes in September 2020.
In addition, we are preparing a number of online master's programmes, admission to which will start in 2021 in various disciplines. We hope to implement some of them in collaboration with Coursera. We will also contribute to the educational market independently, particularly with the launch of Russian-taught master’s programmes.
We take into account the fact that the demand for master’s-level education is primarily associated with the need for specialized knowledge that will allow students to master new, rapidly changing technologies and work in various professional markets. It is with this demand in mind that we design and update our master’s programmes at HSE University.
