For the First Time, HSE Enters QS Top 100 Subject Rankings
HSE has entered the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015 in the top 51-100 in Development Studies, and is the only Russian university in this category.
HSE is also the only Russian university to be ranked in the top 200 in two specific categories: Sociology, and Economics & Econometrics. The university also appears in the 151-200 rankings for Philosophy.
Other Russian universities in the top-100 QS subject rankings include Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, and the National Research Nuclear University.
‘It is not by mere coincidence that HSE has become one of the global leaders in the Development Studies category and that it is the only Russian university representing social sciences. This ranking takes into account our research, analytical and expert work in social, educational and economic policy, as well as sociology, governmental reform, health care economics and politics, demography, urban studies, and innovation. Our activity in these spheres makes HSE stand out among Russian universities as well as many international ones. There are few other institutions that are so active in working on development strategies and cooperation with appropriate governmental bodies,’ explained HSE First Vice Rector Vadim Radaev.
This is the first year for the Development Studies category. ‘High results in this subject area demonstrate that QS experts highly assessed HSE’s interdisciplinary approach to research. HSE in an integrated university where researchers from various areas – economics, sociology, political science – work as a team in order to solve real problems of economic development,’ said HSE Vice Rector Maria Yudkevich.
This is the fifth time that QS has published university rankings by subject. This year, experts assessed 3551 universities, of which 894 of were included in the final rankings. These rankings cover 36 subject areas, and this year new areas include Business & Management, Art & Design, Architecture, Veterinary Science, and Dentistry.
‘It’s important to note that this is not a breakthrough in the natural sciences, which is quite traditional for Russian universities. HSE’s inclusion in the top 100 in Development Studies is a major advancement for the university in the sphere of socio-economic studies and the humanities. We have always known that we give good education, but now we have a confirmation of this from the international academic community. The new QS rankings prove that HSE is competitive on the international level,’ Radaev emphasized.
