Differentiation Between Universities Grows as Online Education Goes Global

How universities develop across the world will be defined by changing technologies, the increase in consumer demand for education, and the creation of alternative systems for testing proficiency among other factors. HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov touched on these and other issues during the discussion on ‘Universities 3.0: Is the Future Near?’ at the Gaidar Forum on January 14. He identified 7 factors that will define how higher education develops over the coming 25 years.

Number of Poor Decreasing Worldwide, but Inequality Still a Problem

Over the past quarter century, the number of people living in extreme poverty has declined three times worldwide. However, prosperity growth remains rather uneven in its overall distribution. HSE’s Nizhny Novgorod Campus to Help RAS Institute of Applied Physics to Market its Developments

The HSE Centre of Entrepreneurship in Nizhny Novgorod has started working in close cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) for the purpose of commercializing the latter’s research results. The Centre will help IAP’s scholars market their projects.

On November 30, 2016, the ‘Digital Publishing’ course was presented at the book fair non/fictio№18.
Students of the ‘Media production in Creative Industries’ MA programme who have just published several digital collections, spoke about how to produce a book in two months. The lecturers shared their opinion on the challenges and difficulties of the course, and the writers and publicists – on their experience of participating in the project.

Fear and Uncertainty Lead to AIDS Denialism

December 1 marked World AIDS Day, the purpose of which is to increase global awareness of the disease. Researchers from HSE’s campus in St. Petersburg have spent the last two years studying a movement of individuals called ‘AIDS dissidents,’ or people who deny the existence of AIDS. Peter Meylakhs, Senior Research Fellow with the International Centre for Health Economics, Management, and Policy at HSE St. Petersburg, discusses some of his research results below.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Maksim Oreshkin as the country’s new Minister of Economic Development. Oreshkin is the former Deputy Minister of Finance and a graduate of the Higher School of Economics.

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) held a roundtable to discuss ‘Russia. The 20th Century’, a book that aims to present contemporary Russia to Western audiences using visual cultural codes and emotional response. Several HSE faculty members took part in the event.
