According to the rating by the Expert Analytical Centre, HSE University has become one of the best entrepreneurial universities in Russia, entering the top three and sharing 1st–3rd place with MIPT and St. Petersburg State University. The final rating included 43 Russian universities. The rating methodology is focused on startups founded by university graduates, the number of graduates to do so, and the volume of investment in such projects.

DigitalSkills 2021, the 3rd WorldSkills Industry Championship in the field of information technologies, took place in the Republic of Tatarstan at the end of September. Alexey Shadrunov, a student of HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM), won a gold medal in ‘Corporate Protection Against Internal Threats to Information Security’.

Fourth-year HSE students Ivan Safonov and Mikhail Anoprenko of the Faculty of Computer Science have won a bronze award in the International Collegiate Programming Contest. The competition finals were held in Moscow on October 5. Students from HSE University’s campuses in Moscow and St. Petersburg took part in the competition, with the team from Russia’s second city placing 19^th overall.

A competition of research centres looking to receive grants through the Artificial Intelligence federal project has concluded, and HSE University is among the winners. Winning centres will focus on developing new AI technologies that expand its application, overcoming existing limitations for solving applied problems and optimizing AI models.

HSE has been included in two Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings. It is ranked in the Top 500 for Computer Science and in 801-1000 group for Engineering.

On October 1, 2021, ‘The Back Office Manifesto: Towards (NO) Future Institutions’, one of the first cryptographic works based on scientific data, was published on Foundation.app, the leading platform for NFT art.

A report by students of MIEM has won a prestigious prize at the 44^th International Conference on Telecommunications and Signal Processing organized by Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic. The project by the HSE students was named the best student work by the organizing committee.

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters held a ceremonial meeting on September 13 at which it named HSE professor Fuad Aleskerov a foreign member. Aleskerov is a professor of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences, head of the Department of Mathematics and director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis. The list of the Academy’s foreign members began with mathematician Mstislav Keldysh, and in the 20 years since, only two more scientists have joined those ranks.
